HUM / REL 493 - Continuation of Intermediate Latin

Course Notes - Week 9

The photo on page 171 is of the funerary busts of M. Gratidius and his wife, now in the Vatican Museum.
The Roman "house tombs" shown on page 172are in the catacombs of St. Sebastian in Rome.
The Roman wall-painting shown on page 187 is now in the British Museum, London.
The statue shown on page 190 is from Pompeii.

The inscription shown on page 182 is a fragment of a longer inscription, known as the "laudto Turiae" dating probably to 8-2 BC. It is the record of a husband's spoken ōrātiō for his deceased wife. The Latin text on pages 181-182 is an adaptation of the inscription.

The Satyricon by Petronius, mentioned on page 174, is a long fictional series of adventures written as a parody of romantic fiction and adventure stories. The Latin excerpt given in the textbook has been considerably abridged, but none of the language has been changed.
