I Timothy
Paul probably wrote 1 Timothy around AD 65, while he was in Philippi in Macedonia. Paul had left Timothy in charge of the Church in Ephesus, and some of the members of the Church were causing problems in Church discipline and doctrine.
1 Timothy 1:2 - Timothy's father was a gentile, but his mother was Jewish. Paul had brought Christianity to Timothy and his family, and had taken on the duties of a Jewish father when he circumcised Timothy - see Acts 16:1-4
1 Timothy 1:3 - this may refer to Acts 20:1, or it may be from a later date
1 Timothy 1:13 - see Acts 9:1-2
1 Timothy 1:15 - see Matthew 9:13
1 Timothy 1:20 - see 2 Timothy 2:17-18 and 2 Timothy 4:14
1 Timothy 2:13 - see Genesis 2:21-23
1 Timothy 2:14 - see Genesis 3:1-6
1 Timothy 3:1 - The Greek word translated as "bishop" means someone who has oversight of something
1 Timothy 3:7 - "them which are without" meant those who did not yet belong to the Church - who were not Christians
1 Timothy 3:8 - the Greek word translated "deacon" means someone who acts as a servant - see Acts 6:1-3
1 Timothy 4:12 - the Greek means "continue to be an example, keep on being an example"
1 Timothy 4:13 - the Greek means "continue to attend to . . . , keep on attending to . . ."
1 Timothy 4:15 & 16 - the Greek means "continue to . . . , keep on . . ."
1 Timothy 5:9 - in the Early Church, the "registered widows" may have some function in the Church, such as caring for orphans, visiting the sick, for which they received food and shelter
1 Timothy 5:18 - see Deuteronomy 25:4 & 24:14-15, and Luke 10:7
1 Timothy 5:19 - see Matthew 18:15-16, and Deuteronomy 19:15
1 Timothy 5:20 - the Greek implies "continue to sin, keep on sinning"
1 Timothy 5:22 - to "lay hands on someone" was an act of ordination for Christian service - see Acts 6:6
