Zephaniah - the date for Zephaniah's ministry is given within the book (Zephaniah 1:1) as being during the reign of king Josiah (II Kings 22:1 - 23:30). He seems to be speaking of conditions before Josiah's reforms of 621 BC.
At that time, most Jews thought of "The Day of the Lord" as being a time when all the foreign nations would be crushed, and God would give special favors to His people. Zephaniah brought the message that God would come with judgment on all evildoers, whether jewish or foreign.
