RELG 330 - History of ChristianityCourse NotesChapter 35Page 503 - Freidrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) was a German theologian who attempted to reconcile Enlightenment ideas with Christianity. He developed what is known as "Higher Criticism" - analyzing the texts of the Bible for their authorship, reliability, etc. He was one of the influences which led to modern "Liberal Theology", which denies the traditional authorship of some of the books of the Bible, and tends to discount the authority of the Bible. Instead, he took as his religious guide the "feeling" of the soul towards God. Copyright © 2005 Shirley J. Rollinson, all Rights Reserved |
