RELG 330 - History of ChristianityCourse NotesChapter 38Page 565 - Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918) taught what is known as the "Social Gospel" - spread the Good News of Jesus by service to the poor and needy. He served as a Baptist pastor for years in the New York Hell's Kitchen area. Robinson bad become the Bishop of Woolwich in the Church of England. He was very influential for a time, but is now mainly remembered for a catchy title to a paper-back. Having read the book, I can say that it was superficial and seemed to aim at sensationalism rather than the truth. In it, he said that even while he was in seminary he had difficulties with prayer, but rather than admitting that he found prayer difficult, and asking for help, he went along with pretending that his prayer-life was healthy, so that he would be considered a good candidate for ordination. About prayer, he said that it was 'an experience, which was experienced by a few, and those were mainly women' - which shows a total misunderstanding of prayer as a conversation with God, and which is available to everyone.
