- p.62 - the Anthropic principle
- The "Weak Anthropic Principle" states that "the observed values of all physical and cosmological quantities are not equally probable but they take on the values restricted by the requirement that there exist sites where carbon-based life can evolve and by the requirement that the Universe be old enough for it to have already done so."
The "Strong Anthropic Principle" states that "the Universe must have those properties which allow life to develop within it at some stage in its history". See the Links page for links to more information
- p.71 - telos
- Telos is a Greek word, meaning "end" in the sense of a goal towards which one works
- p.122 - Baha'i
- The Baha'i faith grew out of Islam. See the Links page for links to more information
- p.124 - the hippocampus
- The hippocampus is part of the brains of human beings and other vertebrates. It plays an important role in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation. See the Links page for links to more information
- p.208 - noumenal
- A term used by the philosopher Emmanuel Kant, for "an object as it is in itself" independent of the mind, as opposed to a phenomenon (an object as it appears to an observer)
